Who Is Sarah Mauney,
The Dancer & Choreographer?
My dance background is rich and varied. I began dancing at the age of 4, starting out in creative movement and modern dance. This early introduction to creative self-expression began my ongoing pursuit of juicy, authentic, truthful movement. At the age of 13, I began intensive ballet studies, leading me to discover the beauty of structure and form in the body. These studies also set me on the path to eventually question the standard of the up-right, Euro-centric ideal of beauty in dance.
It was at this time I decided to make dance and movement my profession.
I have been fortunate to learn from and work alongside dance-makers Keith Johnson, KT Niehoff, Abby Yager and Keith Thompson of Trisha Brown Dance Company, Doug Nielsen, Heather Klophchin, Anthony and Janice Roberts, Erika Randall, Donna Mejia, Nada Diachenko & Helanius J. Wilkins.
My works have been shown in theaters, studios and other less conventional spaces in Oregon, Minnesota, North Carolina, Illinois, and Colorado, and internationally in Lisbon, Portugal.
My current passions include teaching dancers not just WHAT to do with their bodies but HOW to do it beautifully and safely; creating dialogue about how to incorporate the voices of artists who are differently-abled into dance works; exploring the ever-changing, dynamic relationship of the self to the self and the self to others.
I currently live and work out of Boulder.
